"Earth Spirit"
by R. Carlos Nakai
Unlike some of Carlos Nakai's more modernized endeavors and collaborations with pianist Peter Kater, EARTH SPIRIT is firmly rooted in traditional playing styles, with melodies performed solo on the Native American flute. Often on the melancholy side, yet with a strong sense of spirituality, Nakai's wandering tones show his technical skill while evoking images of simpler times in the American Southwest.

"Dance with the Wind"
by Mary Youngblood
Mary Youngblood was inspired to compose the music for DANCE WITH THE WIND after a thunderstorm, where she witnessed a tree thrashing amidst the brisk and sometimes violent winds. Over time, she began to see that the tree was actually dancing with the gusts, and it struck her as a metaphor for finding strength and persistence during the "storms" of life. She sings on three of the songs as well, which echo feelings of freedom and peace. Youngblood's albums keep getting better and better - she is certainly one of Native American music's most brilliant instrumentalists.

"Beneath the Raven Moon"
by Mary Youngblood
One of the most popular artists in Native American music, Mary Youngblood, of Aleut/Seminole heritage, was also one of the first female artists to professionally play the Native American flute. BENEATH THE RAVEN MOON features her exquisite flute skills backed by a contemporary sounding mix of acoustic guitar and percussion. This unique blend, which at times calls to mind blues and folk music, gives her heartfelt melodies and sense of adventurous soul. Highlights include the acoustic title track, a solo flute performance on "Within My Heart" and the upbeat "And We Shall Dance."

"Feather, Stone & Light"
by R. Carlos Nakai, William Eaton, Will Clipman
     R. Carlos Nakai's fourth collaboration with William Eaton is also a venture with percussionist Will Clipman. The album, FEATHER, STONE & LIGHT, consists of material composed by these three artists, blending Nakai's cedar flute with Eaton's lyraharp and spiral clef guitars and Clipman's indigenous percussion, including cymbal, udu, djembe, lyre, congas and tom toms, among others. Three bonus CD tracks include the beautiful "Midnight in the Sacred Grove," "River Dawn" and "Three Worlds."

"Fourth World"
by R. Carlos Nakai
FOURTH WORLD is without a doubt his most lush release to date. The quiet sound of his Native American flute playing shines against the orchestral talents of the Canyon Symphony, who illuminates each of the eleven tracks with sweeping waves of strings. The effect of flute on strings is very soothing, and makes each track flow with a blend of organic harmony and classical elegance. "Fourth World, Rainbow World" and "Eye of the Eagle" are a few great examples of this tranquil interplay, the latter using oboe for added poignancy.

"Inside Monument Valley"
by Paul Horn, R. Carlos Nakai
Flutists R. Carlos Nakai and Paul Horn take listeners on a musical exploration inside and around Monument Valley, deep in the land of the Navajo. With the towering spires and sky framing canyons of Monument Valley as their stage, the two create music that is at once intimate and majestic. Wind, thunder, bird song, the keening of falcons and even the raucous cries of curious ravens provide counterpoint to the twenty soaring melodies of their flutes reverberating through ancient canyons.

"Johnny Whitehorse"
by Johnny Whitehorse
Imagine a sprawling landscape of plateaus set against a golden sunset. The dirt roads are dotted with hoof indentations, for this is horse country - a place of beauty, contemplation and harmony with the earth. An alias/character creation of Robert Mirabal, Whitehorse has a sound that is acoustic, with a nice balance between traditional and contemporary styles. Flute is the central element on many of the cuts, backed by the low rumble of drums, a little didgeridoo and some rattles and shakers. Synthesizer atmosphere is used to add mood and drama to the music.
