"Dakshina"
by Deva Premal
Staying true to form, each track seems to literally flow into the next, as Premal's voice is bathed in a mystical atmosphere of harmonium, light tabla beats, synthesizer ambiance and other regional instruments. The album is both ethereal and warmly serene (it's not surprising that she's been referred to as the "Enya of Mantra"…), and coupled with the repetitive and meditative nature of Premal's chants, the has an amazingly hypnotic effect. Among the mantras she tackles are the ever popular "Om Namah Shivaya" as well as "Brahma Nandam" and "Om Hraum."

"Dial M for Mantra"
by Jai Uttal
DIAL M FOR MANTRA is an album of re-interpretations of Uttal's renowned kirtan singing. To start with, Avis and company re-imagined the beat structure for these songs, replacing tabla rhythms with electronic, ethno-techno beats. Next, the synth ambience was increased, with chillout elements and east-meets-west instrumentation suspended in deep atmosphere. Uttal's chanting is still a central focus, and is a surprisingly intrinsic fit for the electrified backdrops.
